Objectives and Expected Results. This Task will focus on facilitating communication and collaborations among international research groups engaged in the improvement of the accuracy of forecast models and their utility to the wind industry. This Task has the following specific objectives, which may be adjusted following input from national representatives: • To establish an active, open forum for sharing knowledge gained from field experiments and associated advances in understanding of fundamental atmospheric physics to create more accurate forecast models and associated uncertainties. • To establish standards and frameworks for the evaluation of forecast model performance • To identify paths to increased utility of forecast information to the wind industry • To identify most promising areas for new research to improve the quality of forecasts It is anticipated that outcomes from this Task could include • Increased international collaboration and transfer of knowledge regarding improvement of forecast models for the wind industry • A generally accepted framework for the evaluation of forecast models • Guidelines for the evaluation of uncertainties in forecast models • Development of a general framework for the quantitative use of forecast uncertainties by the wind industry • Development of tools to facilitate industry use of forecasts and uncertainties • Webinars and other outreach to inform the industry of advances in forecasting 4 Approach and Methodologies The activities for this IEA Task are divided among three topical work packages (WPs). Additionally, Management of the Task is in its own work package. The four WPs are synergistic and will be executed simultaneously. All four WPs run throughout the whole Task period (M1- M36). WP 0: Management, coordination and dissemination (Lead: Xxxxxx Xxxxxx/DTU) A Task web site will be developed that will provide current information regarding this Task, provide a calendar of meetings and other significant activities, host downloadable documents produced under this Task, and provide links and contact information for key datasets. This Task has the following specific objectives: • To establish an active, open forum for sharing knowledge among the participants, related IEA Wind Tasks and other related TCPs through workshops, dissemination and communication measures • To establish and communicate standards and frameworks for the operation and evaluation of forecast model performance • To identify paths to increased application and utility of forecast information to the task stakeholders • To advance the knowledge in the underlying atmospheric physics, in the mathematical models converting the transforming atmospheric quantities to energy system application variables, in the modelling of the uncertainty and in the applications and decision making • To identify most promising areas for new research to improve the quality and utility of forecasts • To provide guidelines for the implementation of optimal forecasting solutions It is anticipated that outcomes from this Task could include • Increased international collaboration and transfer of knowledge regarding improvement of forecast models for the wind, power and energy industry • A generally accepted framework for the implementation, operation and evaluation of forecast models and solutions • Guidelines for the calculation and evaluation of uncertainties in forecast models • Guidelines for the requirements of instrumentation and measurement data for forecasting models and solutions • Development of a general framework for the quantitative use of forecast uncertainties by the wind, power and energy industry • Special sessions in conferences and four dedicated workshops • Webinars and other outreach to inform the industry of advances in forecasting methods, performance and applications
Objectives and Expected Results. The objective of the proposed IEA Wind Task 40 on Downwind Turbine Technologies is to coordinate international research and investigate the benefits of downwind turbine technologies toward the reduction of the LCOE and proliferation of offshore and onshore wind plants. Other objectives include: • Innovate wind turbine technology • Identify and resolve technical issues relevant to downwind turbine design • Modify IEC standards as needed: e.g. IEC61400-1 • Reshape the national regulations: e.g. identify constraining regulations and propose changes to acceptance criteria. Task 40 will gather international thought leaders for annual meetings during the three years project duration. The outcome of the meetings will be: • Organize a global network that coordinates research and verification efforts • Quantify known benefits as well as areas needing research and verification • Quantify opportunities for cost of energy reduction • Identify potential barriers such as changes to standards and/or regulations • Identify opportunities for collaborative research and demonstration projects • Identify perceived technical risks and propose resolutions • Update and expand the knowledge basis for downwind turbines

Objectives and Expected Results. TCIHC’s stated goal and strategic objectives are to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths among the urban poor by increasing the use of modern contraceptive methods among married women 15-49 years of age - with special focus on adolescents and youth – and by improving the coverage and quality of evidence-based reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health interventions. Objectives and Expected Results. The main activities of the proposed extension project are: • Discussing and evaluating numerical modeling strategies for offshore wind systems • Discussing and outlining best validation practices, including the assessment and importance of uncertainty • Discussing methods for incorporating higher-fidelity models in the validation procedure • Developing a suite of benchmark models and simulations with corresponding physical measurements that have quantified uncertainty • Running simulations and processing the simulation results • Comparing the results in a side-by-side fashion to physical response data These above activities fall under a broader set of objectives which include: • Assessing the accuracy and reliability of results obtained by simulations to establish confidence in the predictive capabilities of the codes • Training new analysts how to run and apply the codes correctly • Identifying and validating the capabilities and limitations of implemented theories • Investigating and refining applied analysis methodologies • Identifying further research and development needs The past verification and validation work by the OC3, OC4, and OC5 projects has led to dramatic improvements in model accuracy as the code-to-code and code-to-data comparisons have helped identify deficiencies and needed improvements in existing codes. These results are important because the advancement of the offshore wind industry is closely tied to the development and accuracy of the applied numerical models.
Objectives and Expected Results. As was highlighted by the DW TEM and previous research, the primary issues facing the DW market are broad and range from lack of information, consumer confidence, high costs, and a lack of consensus on appropriate deployment requirements. [4] This requires a broad approach be taken as trying to address only one of the key challenges, such as supporting innovation around system designs, may make a lower cost product, but will not address the other problems facing the industry. Additionally, many different institutions are working to address specific pieces of the problems, but there are no organizations that are able to bring together the expansive work that is being undertaken across a broad spectrum of research. It should also be noted that the work being undertaken in the larger area of distributed generation, resilient energy systems and islanded or microgrids systems, greatly dwarfs all the work being undertaken specifically for DW. Most of these efforts are technology agnostic, although the dominance of the very robust PV industry means that other viable technologies, such as wind, are largely left out of consideration which may or may not limit the ability of DW and other technologies to successfully engage in this market space. It should also be noted that the DW TEM and other discussions leading to this proposal should be seen as the starting point of discussions and that through further collaboration and discussions further research work or development issues will be identified. Likely this specific effort will not be able to take on additional research efforts, but it may be able to play a role in communicating those challenges to organizations or efforts doing similar work. Based on the extends list of challenges identified thus far, five areas of technical collaboration were identified as the most pressing but where expanded international collaboration would be poised to have expanded impact. These areas include: ● Research to support an update of existing wind standards, expanding consumer confidence while allowing needed technology innovation. ● Technical data sharing in both process and practice, providing researchers and the wider industry access to global information that can be used to address wider challenges facing DW. ● Research and the development of tools to improve resource assessment and more specifically performance prediction from DW technologies. ● Expanded research and collaboration around the integration of DW technologies, fo...
