Professional Improvement Leave. A teacher may be granted leave to be used for the teacher's professional improvement. Professional improvement days may be approved by the superintendent and used for the purpose of: 1. Visitation to view other instructional techniques or programs. 2. Conferences, workshops, or seminars conducted by colleges, universities, or vocational schools. The teacher planning to use a professional improvement day shall notify the principal at least one week in advance of the proposed absence. The teacher shall be required to file a written report with the principal within one (1) week of attendance at such event. Also, the teacher may/shall be requested to return with materials and/or information to be shared with other teachers. The expense of attending such visitation, conference, workshop, or seminar will be paid by the Board when the proper reimbursement applications are sent to the district office. In cases where attendance at a convention, workshop, seminar, or other educational activity is deemed to be of value only to the individual teacher, leave may be granted for attendance with either no expenses or limited expenses being underwritten by the district. In these cases, no written or verbal reports will be required.
Professional Improvement Leave. The parties agree that Trustee Policy on Professional Improvement Leave shall remain in full force and effect for bargaining unit members for the life of the Agreement: Professional non-academic staff are eligible for leave for professional improvement in cases where it can be clearly demonstrated that such leave will result in specific benefit to the University. Such leave shall be available as a matter of privilege rather than as a right and shall be granted to an eligible staff member only in those cases where the following conditions have been met:
Professional Improvement Leave. Workplace provisions - the employer will supply, maintain18 and make available the following items in reasonable and sufficient quantities at each fire station; refrigerator, oven, microwave, dishwasher, two washers, two dryers, ice machine19, laundry supplies, eating and cooking utensils, and reasonable local telephone service, so long as these items were purchased with tax dollars. The Employer also agrees to use its "best efforts" to ensure that the following items are in sufficient supply at each station: laundry detergent, bleach, paper towels, soap (dish and hand), scouring pads and toilet paper. Professional Improvement Leave. (1) A leave of absence for tenure teachers of one (1) school year may be granted to any teacher upon application, for the purpose of participating in foreign or military teaching programs; the Peace Corps, Teacher Corps, Job Corps, or advanced educational leave, as a full-time participant in such program, provided such teacher states his/her intentions to return to the school system. Said leave may be extended one (1) additional year at the request of the teacher and the approval of the Board. Upon return from such leave, a teacher shall be placed in the same position on the salary schedule as he would have been had he/she taught in the District during such period. (2) A leave of absence for any tenure teacher may be granted for cultural travel for a period of up to one (1) year. Said leave may be extended one (1) additional year at the request of the teacher and the approval of the Board. No experience credit will be granted.
Professional Improvement Leave. Section A. Definition. Professional Improvement Leave is fully or partially paid leave or leave without pay for the purpose of attending conferences and courses of study which are work related.
Professional Improvement Leave. A professional improvement leave may, at the Board's discretion, be granted for one quarter, one semester, or one year to an employee who has served the District a minimum of six (6) years. To qualify for a professional improvement leave, an employee must be eligible following the leave for at least five (5) years of service before reaching thirty (30) years of service and/or becoming eligible for state retirement. An employee on professional improvement leave shall receive all employee benefits he/she would have received if he/she had remained on active duty and fifty percent (50%) of his/her regular salary. The difference of the cost of the substitute and the on-leave teacher's salary shall be used when calculating the salary compliance. An employee receiving salary while on professional improvement leave shall not engage in teaching or other remunerative occupations during such period. This does not prevent an employee from furthering his education on a teaching scholarship or fellowship. An employee granted a professional improvement leave shall agree to return to regular service in the District upon the expiration of said leave, for a period of at least three (3) years. If an employee does not return to regular service with the District at the expiration of the leave, all salary paid during the leave shall become due and payable to the District. For partial service, it shall be pro-rated. If an employee should die or become permanently disabled while on professional improvement leave, no repayment of salary paid while on leave shall be required. An employee desiring professional improvement leave must submit a written request to the Superintendent prior to March l5 of the school year prior to the year for which professional improvement leave is desired. The request shall specify the reasons for which leave is requested and shall state how said leave will be of benefit to the district. The request shall also provide for regular progress reports to the Board and for a commitment to staff in-service training for the district upon return from said leave. Only one employee may be granted professional improvement leave during any three-year period. An employee returning from professional leave shall be given the same consideration for returning to the position of his/her last assignment as if he/she had been in a regular teaching assignment.
Professional Improvement Leave. Regular certificated employees, with tenure status, upon recommendation of the Superintendent, may be granted a leave of absence without compensation for the purpose of professional improvement. The professional improvement shall be in conjunction with an accredited college or university. Such leave shall not last less than one semester nor more than one year. No teaching experience credit shall be given for this leave.
Professional Improvement Leave. A maximum of two (2) days per contract year, not to be charged to the individual employee’s Discretionary Leave, may be used by each employee for his/her professional improvement. Professional improvement days may be used for any educational purpose at the discretion of the employee. The employee planning to use professional improvement days shall notify the Director and his/her building administrator at least one (1) week in advance of his/her absence.

After five (5) years of continuous service with the Employer, a teacher may be granted Professional Improvement Leave for the purpose of improving their education training. 9.2.1.1. The teacher shall be required to return to the employ of the Employer for a period of three (3) years after completing the Professional Improvement Leave. 9.2.2. A teacher on Professional Improvement Leave shall receive an annual salary of fifty per cent (50%) of their salary at time of leave. 9.2.2.1. A teacher who resigns from service of the Employer before completing the required three (3) year period of service following such leave, shall repay the Professional Improvement Leave salary on a prorated basis. 9.2.2.2. Should a teacher fail to return to the employ of the Employer following Professional Improvement Leave, the teacher shall repay the Professional Improvement Leave salary. 9.2.3. A teacher who takes Professional Improvement Leave of absence shall retain their years of service and position. Upon resumption of duties, the teacher shall be returned to a position no less favourable than the one the teacher held before the leave was taken; where reduction of staff is required the teacher resumes their status in relation to the staff as a whole. 9.2.4. Written application for a Professional Improvement Leave of absence must be made by a teacher before February 1st prior to the school year for which such Professional Improvement Leave is requested. 9.2.5. If application is made, the Employer may grant one (1) Professional Improvement Leave per year, and may in its discretion, grant more than one (1). Preference shall be given to years of service.
Professional Improvement Leave. 10.1 A teacher is eligible, after three years of service with the Board, to apply to the Board, prior to February 1, for professional improvement leave for the purpose of further study which will increase his or her capabilities. 10.2 The Board shall submit all applications to a selection committee of two Board members and the superintendent or delegate, who shall be a non-voting member of the committee and two teacher representatives appointed by Local No 77 of the Alberta Teachers' Association. 10.2.1 Notwithstanding clause 10.2, in the event of a tie vote, the superintendent or delegate will cast the deciding vote. 10.3 In addition, the Board shall suggest criteria of a general nature to be used in the selection of the applicants for professional leave. 10.4 The selection committee will identify to the Board, candidates eligible to receive professional leave on or before March 1. 10.5 From the candidates identified by this selection committee the Board may, at its discretion, grant one or more teachers a one year professional improvement leave. 10.6 Each teacher granted professional improvement leave shall receive an allowance equal to $25,000 or 65 percent of grid salary whichever is the greater. 10.7 The allowance shall be computed based on the teacher's salary agreement effective at the date the leave commences. 10.8 Teachers on professional improvement leave shall not be eligible for any benefits under this contract except those provided by the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan and Alberta Health Care. 10.9 The one year period of professional improvement leave shall not be considered as equal to classroom service for the purpose of determining experience for salary purposes. 10.10 Unless approved otherwise by the Board any teacher granted professional improvement leave will be required: (a) to remain on contract with the division for an additional period of not less than two years, or (b) to repay the allowance or repay that portion of the allowance for services not rendered in (a) plus interest at current rates. 10.11 Prior to taking professional improvement leave the teacher shall enter into a written contract with the Board establishing: (a) a teaching position, no less favorable than the one enjoyed before the leave, upon return. (b) the method and time of payment of the entitlement. (c) the dates of the leave.
