Carry-Over and Conversion. Employees will be offered the opportunity to convert to cash any part of his/her sick leave accrued and not used in the proceeding twelve (12) month period. Payment will be made in the first paycheck in December each year. The cash conversion of the sick leave accrued and not used for each usage period of this Agreement shall be at the following rates: Number of hours subject to Cash Conversion % of Regular Rate 80 80% 72 -79.9 75% 64 to 71.9 70% 56 to 63.9 65% 48 to 55.9 60% 47.9 and less 55% An employee not exercising a choice will automatically have the hours carried forward. An employee with a minimum of five (5) years of state service who terminates state service or retires shall convert to cash any sick leave accrued at the employee’s regular rate of pay earned at the time of separation, within three (3) years of separation, at the rate of fifty-five percent (55%) for retirement separation and fifty percent (50%) for all other separations. If an employee dies, the converted sick leave shall be credited to his/her estate. An employee who is granted military leave or leave without pay may be paid for accrued sick leave or may keep it in reserve for use upon return at his/her discretion. An employee who is re-employed or recalled from lay off and who received a lump sum payment for unused sick leave may have such days restored by returning the amount paid by the Employer for the number of days to be restored. Employees hired after July 1, 1986, who have previous service with political subdivisions of the State may use sick leave accrued with such prior employers but shall not be permitted to convert such sick leave to cash. An employee who transfers from one bargaining unit to another shall be credited with the unused balance of his/her sick leave balance up to the maximum sick leave accumulation permitted in the bargaining unit to which the employee transfers.

Carry-Over and Conversion. Full-time employees who, at the time of their disability or service retirement, have ten or more years of service with the College or any agency of the state or any of its political subdivisions may convert only their accrued but unused time for sick leave with Columbus State to monetary compensation. An employee of the College, having prior public service with state government or any political subdivision thereof is entitled to transfer any unused sick leave credit received from his prior service, provided the College receives written verification of such prior service from such prior public employer. In order to be eligible for this payment, the employee must retire directly into a state retirement system from active employment with the College. New employees hired after July 1, 2002 shall not be eligible to cash out transferred sick leave. One fourth (1/4) of the accumulated sick leave earned as an employee of the College to a maximum of forty-five (45) days may be converted to a cash payment at the time of retirement, based upon the employee’s rate of compensation at the time of retirement. The payment for sick leave under this policy eliminates for all time the sick leave credit of the employee at the time of retirement, and such payment will be made only once. The same pay out arrangement shall be made to the full-time employee’s spouse or if there is no surviving spouse, to the employee’s estate upon the death of an employee who was actively employed by the College, if the employee was eligible for retirement at the time of death. Carry-Over and Conversion. In the pay period including November 1st, employees will be offered the opportunity to convert to cash any part of his/her accrued sick leave for the prior year at the rate of fifty percent (50%). (Example: 10 days of unused sick leave is convertible to 5 days {50% of the 10} are waived.) This opportunity to convert will be available beginning November 1, and continue annually. Any employee not exercising a claim on or before November 15th will automatically have the hours carried forward. All accumulated sick leave that has been earned in previous years will be carried forward and is not convertible to cash, but may be utilized as outlined in this policy. Employees choosing to convert any of their time to cash should provide their supervisor with at least two (2) weeks’ notice in order for processing.
