Bereavement and Funeral Leave. Up to five (5) consecutive school days of absence, without loss of pay, within 8 days of the death, commencing with the first day requested by the teacher, shall be granted a teacher for a death in the immediate family, including miscarriage. Up to three (3) consecutive school days of absence, without loss of pay, within 8 days of the death, commencing with the first day requested by the teacher shall be granted a teacher for a death of a niece, nephew, aunt, or uncle. The 8 day rule may be waived by the Superintendent in extreme circumstances. PTO days may be used to extend bereavement without limitations. If attendance for the visitation and/or funeral requires extended travel or if the teacher is involved in funeral arrangements for someone other than immediate family, the teacher may request additional leave from the Superintendent. One (1) funeral day without loss of pay may be granted a teacher for the death of someone outside of the above listed criteria with Superintendent approval.

Bereavement and Funeral Leave. A regular employee shall be granted up to three (3) workdays (maximum twenty-four [24] hours) of paid bereavement leave at the time of a death in the employee’s immediate family. Such employee shall be granted up to an additional two (2) days (maximum of sixteen [16] hours) of paid bereavement leave when air travel or one (1)-way land travel of four (4) hours or longer is necessary. To be eligible for the additional one (1) or (2) two days (maximum of eight [8] or sixteen [16] hours) paid leave, pre-authorization from the Department Director or designate is required. Bereavement leave shall be prorated based on FTE, and may be used consecutively or non-consecutively. Bereavement leave shall normally be used within two (2) weeks of the date of the death. Exceptions to the two (2)-week use provision will be considered on a case by case basis and requires Manager approval. Bereavement leave may be used for qualifying family members in the case of imminent death but the total bereavement leave portion shall not exceed the three (3) or five (5) workday (maximum forty [40] hours) limitation. For the purposes of this Section, eligible family members are:

Immediate family is to be defined as follows: Mother, Father, Step-Mother, Step-Father, Brother, Sister, Wife or Husband, Son, Daughter, Step- children, Mother-in-law or Father-in-Law, Brother-in-Law, Sister-in-law, Son-in-Law, Daughter-in-Law, Grandparents and Grandchildren, or a member of the employee’s household.
Bereavement and Funeral Leave. It is understood that bereavement and funeral leave is granted to enable the employee to attend to the personal needs of the family and to fulfill responsibilities that occur as a result of the death of a relative. The days are not vacation days nor are they cumulative.
Bereavement and Funeral Leave. In the event of death in the employee’s family, the employee shall be entitled to absence with full pay for four (4) days not chargeable to the employee’s sick leave or vacation accumulation per death. Such family members shall include; the husband, wife, child, mother, father, brother or sister. In the event of the death of the employee’s mother-in-law, father-in-law, grandfather, grandmother, grandchild or any other relative residing in the employee’s household, the employee shall be entitled to absence with full pay for three (3) days not chargeable to the employee’s accumulated sick leave or vacation leave per death. In the event of the death of the employee’s brother-in-law, sister-in-law, or any step child, the employee shall be entitled to absence with full pay for one (1) day not chargeable to the employee’s accumulated sick leave or vacation leave per death. In any of the above situations, any needed additional days required by the employee may be utilized from the employee’s accumulated sick leave or vacation time. The definition ofimmediate family” for the purpose of this article shall include domestic partners of the same or opposite sex who have lived in the same household for at least six (6) months and have made a commitment to continue to live as a family.
Bereavement and Funeral Leave. Full-time employees shall be entitled to be paid for their scheduled hours, to a maximum of twenty-four (24) hours within six (6) calendar days, barring extenuating circumstances, following the death of a member of the employee’s immediate family: parents, grandparents, parents-in-law, spouse/civil union partner, child, brother, sister, grandchild, step-grandparents, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, son- in-law, or other family member in their household or significant other who is part of their household. Part-time employees shall be entitled to be paid for their scheduled hours, to a maximum of twelve (12) hours within six (6) calendar days, barring extenuating circumstances, following the death of a member of their immediate family as described above. Requests for usage of employee PTO time to attend any funeral-related services shall not be unreasonably denied. Employees may use up to one day of PTO per year to attend funeral-related activities related to the death of an aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew without having such absence count against them as an unscheduled PTO day. Virtua may permit the use of three (3) additional PTO days to extend a bereavement leave if requested by the employee. Such PTO time must be earned or the employee may take an unpaid leave of absence. Such absence will not be considered an unscheduled absence. The Employer may grant additional unpaid leave required for travel in such circumstances.
