Sick Leave - Notice. To be entitled to sick leave during a period, an employee must give the employer notice as soon as reasonably practicable (which may be at a time before or after the sick leave has started) that the employee is (or will be) absent from his or her employment during the period because of a personal illness, or injury, of the employee. This requirement does not apply to an employee who could not comply with it because of circumstances beyond the employee’s control.
Sick Leave - Notice. The employees shall notify their Department Executive and the department either prior to, or within two (2) hours after the time set for beginning their daily duties, or as may be specified by the Department Executive.

In order to draw sick pay, a worker shall make every effort to notify his / her supervisor prior to the scheduled starting time each day unless the worker is able to advise the supervisor of the specific anticipated duration of the absence on the first day of illness. If the duration of the illness is not confirmed by a physician’s certificate and is to last more than three working days, the worker shall notify his / her supervisor on the fourth day away from work of the anticipated date of return unless the worker is unable to provide such notice either personally or through another individual. If a worker becomes seriously ill while on vacation leave, the period of absence from work while seriously ill may be changed to sick leave, provided the worker notifies his / her supervisor during the period of illness or, if out of the area, submits sufficient evidence of the illness upon return to the area.

If it is not practicable for the employee to provide notice, the employee’s designee may do so. If the need for sick leave is unforeseeable and is for purposes authorized under the domestic violence leave act, chapter 49.76 RCW, then the employee (or if impracticable, his or her designee) must give oral or written notice to the Employer no later than the end of the first day that the employee takes such leave. Use of sick leave for the reasons discussed in Article 12.3 will not count as an absence from work or an occurrence under the attendance policy, as long as the employee has sick leave balance to cover the time off.
Sick Leave - Notice. A Member, upon knowing that he will be absent from work through sickness or injury, shall inform his superior officer or the Police Chief in accordance with procedure established in the Police Department.
