Death in Family Leave. An employee who is absent due to a death in the immediate family will be excused without loss of pay for a reasonable period of time (as determined by their supervisor), based on need and circumstances, usually one to three days. Paid time off may be requested in the instance of a death of someone outside of an employee’s immediate family and will be permitted at the Company’s discretion. Immediate family shall be defined as the employee’s spouse, parents, mother-in-law, father- in-law, grandparents, son or daughter, brother or sister, grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law or domestic partners.

Death in Family Leave. 1. Death leave shall be defined to mean the leave from a post of duty of an employee due to the death of a member of the immediate family.
Death in Family Leave. In case of death in the imme­ diate family of a full time employee, such employee shall be allowed a maximum of three days leave with pay, provided however that no employee will be paid more than a full week’s pay. The term immediate family shall mean husband, wife, son, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother, mother- in-law, father-in-law or any relative residing with the em­ ployee.
Death in Family Leave. Leave shall be granted upon the approval of the Superintendent. All full and part time Paraprofessionals shall be entitled to a maximum of five (5) consecutive days of absence with pay immediately following a death in the immediate family. Immediate family is defined as spouse, parents, children, stepchildren, siblings, grandchildren, grandparents and parents-in-law. When a death occurs in the immediate family as defined above, the Paraprofessionals may convert up to a maximum of three (3) Personal days to additional bereavement leave.
Death in Family Leave. In the event of a death in the immediate family of the employee, the employee shall be granted up to three (3) working shifts off with pay in each calendar year (discretion of the Chief understood). Four (4) hours shall be reported as funeral leave and will not be charged to sick or vacation accruals. The additional time off may be designated as either sick or vacation, as the employee chooses. The immediate family is defined as:  Spouse and children of the employee  Mother, father, brothers, and sisters of employee  Mother, father, brothers, and sisters of employee’s spouse  Grandparents and grandchildren, domestic partner, or other residing in the employee’s household as stated in the Family Medical Leave Act Time off under this paragraph may also be granted due to serious illness or accident in the immediate family, death of a family member not defined above, or unusual circumstances relating to a death in the immediate family, and may be charged to sick leave or vacation at the discretion of, and as approved by, the Fire Chief.

Additional time off without pay may be granted if necessary. Death in Family Leave. In the event of a death in the immediate family of an Officer, the Officer shall be granted consecutive working days off with pay according to the following schedule: Officers working a five-day forty hour week will be granted four (4) consecutive working days off. Officers working a four-day forty hour week will be granted three (3) consecutive working days off. The immediate family shall be defined as mother, father, legal spouse, child, brother, sister, half-siblings, grandparents, spouses’ grandparents, great-grandparents, spouses’ great- grandparents, mother-in-law, father-in-law, grandchildren, step-parent, step-children and other members of the immediate household residing with the Officer. Unless exclusive permission is received from the Chief of Police, the working days as outlined by this Section shall be taken within fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of the death of the family member. Officers on military leave during the time of death of an immediate family member shall not be entitled to the provisions of this Article. In the case of a death of friends or relatives outside the immediate family, or if an Officer wishes to perform service as a pallbearer, an Officer may request other types of accrued leave. The leave must be approved in advance by the Officer’s supervisor.

Full pay for absence not to exceed three (3) days for a death locally and five (5) days if the funeral is held more than one hundred fifty (150) miles from the City of Duluth shall be granted to eligible persons covered by this Agreement to attend a funeral in their immediate family.
