Each party will for the duration of the Project and for a period of 6 months after its termination (for whatever reason), not directly or indirectly solicit for employment, nor offer employment to, nor enter into any contract for services with any of the other party’s employees or subcontractors who, at the time of such action or during a period of 6 months immediately preceding such action, carried out work in connection with the Project.

Recruitment of staff. Recruitment of staff participants was affected by their concerns and perceptions that the study was being used to assess whether their practice was compassionate or not. The study aimed to recruit ten registered nurses and ten healthcare assistants for the focus groups but six registered nurses (RNs) and six healthcare assistants (HCAs) were recruited for each focus group. The staff sample included RNs and HCAs working on the three wards. The inclusion criteria for registered mental health nurses and healthcare assistants were a minimum of six months experience on one of the three acute mental health wards. Invitation letters were distributed to all staff on the acute wards and interested participants completed attached tear-off slip and handed it to the Xxxx Managers who notified the researcher (Appendix 7). As stated above due to staff working different shifts, it was felt that the Xxxx Manager could collect the tear-off slips and contact the researcher to prevent delays and ensure the research was completed within the required timeframe. The response rate from staff was particularly poor so the researcher employed a variety of strategies to improve recruitment. I attended staff meetings on the wards to explain the aims and objectives of the study and address any issues that staff had about the study. The recruitment difficulties encountered with staff participants could be attributed my position and role as researcher in the Trust. I was aware that my position as a senior nurse within Trust and role as a researcher brought different dynamics in the relationship between myself and staff participants. This is because a focus on role as a senior nurse rather than a researcher could introduce power imbalance between the researcher and participant relationship and potentially impact on the research process. Although the invitation letter clearly stated that the study was being conducted as part of a doctorate degree, staff seemed to have focused on my senior nursing role within the Trust placing me in a position of authority within the research process. There was concern that my role within the Trust could make staff feel they had to take part in the research and create an unequal relationship within the research process. There was thus some initial perceptions among staff that the study was being conducted to ascertain whether their practice was compassionate and so there was reluctance from staff to volunteer for the study.
