PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO PART MEASURES. Outcome 1.1 Faculty and Research Support- Minority institutions can compete more successfully for the best and brightest faculty and students and as a result position themselves to supply NASA with a cadre of qualified researchers to address the needs of human resources at NASA and at other scientific organizations currently and in the future. Faculties at MIs are better able to participate in advanced research opportunities that enhance their teaching capability in STEM related areas and support the teaching-learning process.

PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO PART MEASURES. Fiscal year 2010 (Oct 2009 – September 2010) (Note: exhibits area of Visitor Center was closed five months from mid-December to mid-May) • Tour groups: 795 tour groups (29,465 people) ▪ including 426 student groups (15,989 students, teachers, chaperones) • Open House: 36,000 visitors (May 15-16) JPL is a member of the NASA Museum Alliance and is included in the number of museums that host NASA events. JPL hosts events such as a monthly public lecture series, regular educator workshops (primarily on weekends), career nights, major mission events (e.g., landing on Mars), and other mission-related events. IMPROVEMENTS (e.g. project management, efficiencies, etc.) MADE IN THE PAST YEAR/PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED The project promoted internal conversations at JPL about understanding our visitors and their needs, how better to tell the story of NASA/JPL, and resulted in closer working relationships between the Education Office (which is responsible for the funding) and the Public Services Office (which is responsible for the facility and tours), as well as the Audio/Visual Office and Office of Communications and Education. The student tours are being reshaped to deliver more educational (rather than informational) content. The project implementation team maintained focus and met deadlines despite the tragic death of the lead graphic designer late in the process and a number of unexpected personal losses (immediate family members) over a short period of time. Construction and exhibit installation had to be scheduled around heavy use of the adjoining xxx Xxxxxx Auditorium to minimize hazards including noise, dust and deliveries. Promotional efforts by NETS for agency education and mission directorate projects help leverage funding and resources, providing projects with direct student and educator interaction objectives with electronic information and distribution support. The Project Accomplishments listed above provide details on this support to the Office of Education and mission directorate's projects and activities, which contribute to the accomplishment of the measures listed below.
PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO PART MEASURES. PART Measure (short duration professional development) – Percentage of elementary and secondary educators who obtain NASA content-based resources or participate in short-duration NASA education activities and use NASA resources in their classroom instruction. Through short duration professional development experiences, EFP reached a total of 20,703 educators. Of that total number, 7978 educators’ primary NASA relationship is with another K-12 project. This overlap reflects EFP’s synergistic connection with other projects and its strong commitment to serving both internal and external audiences. PART Measure (long duration professional development) – Percentage of elementary and secondary educators who participate in NASA training programs and use NASA resources in their classroom instruction Through long duration professional development experiences, EFP reached a total of 287 educators. Of that total, 76 educators had a primary NASA relationship with another K-12 project. This overlap reflects EFP’s ability to provide rich and valuable extended professional development for educators both connected with and outside of NASA K-12 projects. PART Measure (Students) – Number of elementary and secondary student participants in NASA instructional and enrichment activities In FY09, EFP reached 775,148 K-12 students. Of that total number, 37,767 students were already involved in other NASA K-12 projects. This overlap reflects the value of the EFP portfolio in supporting the goals and objectives of K-12 projects that reach students.
PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO PART MEASURES. The SEMAA Project is aligned to PART Measure 1 and PART Measure 4 PART Measure 1: Percentage increase in the number of elementary and secondary student participants in NASA instructional and enrichment activities: In FY 2007 SEMAA served 17,773 K-12 Direct Student participants. In FY 2008 the project served 18,894 direct students resulting in a 6.3% increase over FY 2007. Additionally, SEMAA served 21,763 Indirect Students for a total of 40,657 K-12 student participants in NASA instructional and enrichment activities.
PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO PART MEASURES. (INCLUDE DATA PLUS EXPLANATION) To facilitate professional development internally and externally that will allow educators to become familiar with best practices in teaching space science. The staff at Space Center Houston has developed a long term vision statement whereas professional development is encouraged. The educational staff at SCH has received professional development as well as provided professional development at Houston area conferences. The training series that the staff devised has increased our delivery to students. As a result, our network of educators now reaches beyond our previous Region 4 Educational Service Center in prior years to significant numbers in other school regions To encourage collaboration and sharing of educational activities between NASA’s JSC community and its partners. The monthly newsletter is distributed to more than 5,000 contractors, civil servants, visitor center and educational workers.

Visitors included families, school groups, after school groups, tour groups (US and international) and other members of the general public. An additional 18,126 were reached through special education events that were held outside of the Exploration Center (described in Goal 1). These audiences were generally school groups and families, although some events (e.g., evening lectures) also drew adult audiences.

IMPROVEMENTS (e.g., project management, efficiencies, etc.) MADE IN THE PAST YEAR • Streamlined the process for gathering weekly notes and data for monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. • Changed project tracking to a portfolio style of management to permit cost analysis at the task, project, or entire portfolio level • Increased the flow of information within the project by ensuring all team members participate in weekly status meetings. • Utilized social media services to expand the range for NASA education messages to an audience of approximately 1,492,700 people. • Created template designs and procedures roadmap to speed development of new websites.
PROJECT CONTRIBUTIONS TO PART MEASURES. PART Measure 7 – Percentage of elementary and secondary educators “who haven’t participated in intensive NASA training programs and use” NASA content based resources in their classroom instruction. In FY08, EFP reached a total of 1,442 educators. Although primarily designed as student involvement project, EFP serves educators through their participation in ISS downlinks, ARISS contacts, and EarthKAM missions. 100% of the educators participated in short duration professional development associated with these activities.
