The Flexible Professional Development clause establishes the right for individuals or employees to pursue professional growth opportunities in a manner that accommodates varying schedules, learning formats, or personal needs. This may include options such as online courses, workshops outside regular work hours, or self-paced learning modules, allowing participants to select development activities that best fit their circumstances. The core function of this clause is to promote continuous skill enhancement while recognizing and adapting to diverse learning preferences and time constraints, ultimately supporting both individual advancement and organizational goals.
Flexible Professional Development. One professional development day will be a flexible professional development day. Teachers are responsible for completing the district-required training (i.e., training videos, etc.) as their flexible professional development. The time allotted for training should not exceed six (6) hours of training time plus one (1) hour of self-directed professional development and be completed by the District’s required deadline.
Flexible Professional Development. Each teacher shall complete ten (10) hours of flexible professional development. Each teacher must submit the completion form to the building principal on or before May 31 of the current school year as a condition of being compensated for the 10 hours. Any failure to submit the completion form by May 31 of the current school year shall forfeit two (2) days of duty pay and any teacher completing more than five (5) hours but less than ten (10) shall forfeit one day duty pay.

Flexible Professional Development is designed to offer staff members an opportunity to individualize their on-going learning and professional growth, which is mandated by state school law. It is intended to differentiate to the various needs and interests of the professional staff.
1. The flex activity must take place outside of the staff member’s contractual hours and may occur with prior approval during the summer provided that all deadlines are met.
2. All professional development activities must be pre-approved in writing by the building principal/supervisor no later than the first Monday in May. Activities can occur after that date, but must be pre-approved by the first Monday in May.
3. University, college course work or State of Michigan Board of Education Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) will be allowed if paid for by the staff member.
4. A leave of absence of anything less than one (1) year will not reduce or eliminate the flexible professional development requirement hours agreed to on the calendar.
5. All completed Flex Professional Development Plan/Logs must be handed in on or prior to June 30. The Flexible Professional Development Plan/Logs and other information are available in Appendix E.
6. Non-completion of the Flexible Professional Development Plan/Logs will result in a deduction equal to the hours agreed upon on the calendar. Flexible Professional Development. The six (6) hours of on or off campus PD may be fulfilled in a variety of ways. Staff may submit and take part in professional partnerships, conduct and lead PD opportunities within the district, attend PD opportunities that occur after the school day has ended, throughout the school year beyond the school day, attend and participate in webinars, recommend and participate with guest speakers, develop and participate in topical professional learning communities (PLC's), and participate in virtual learning offerings that may be offered by the district. Staff may submit requests for PD proposals consistent with our more traditional scheduling of professional development. For teachers, the PD for these (6) hours must occur after the school day ends. The parties believe this model provides for maximum flexibility and fluidity, professional and administrative ownership, and personalized and meaningful teaching and learning experiences for all participants. The use of these six (6) hours will be designed in collaboration with the principal and professional development/building staff with feedback from the Professional Development Committee. The Professional Development Committee (PDC) includes two representatives from each of the K-8 schools and four representatives from Algonquin. The PDC is responsible for assisting in the development of site-based and District parameters, including but not limited to documentation, procedures and scheduling. Each member of the PDC will receive a stipend of $27.50 per hour as defined by contract.
