Teacher Parental Leave. A. A leave of absence without pay shall be granted to a pregnant tenured teacher or a teacher adopting a child upon her written request for such leave. The request for absence shall be accompanied by a certificate of pregnancy signed by a qualified physician giving the expected day of delivery or by verification of a legal adoption. Application for parental leave shall be made in writing to the Superintendent at least one hundred twenty (120) calendar days prior to the anticipated birth of the child. After consultation with the teacher, the Superintendent shall determine the commencement and termination of such leave, taking into consideration maintenance of continuity of instruction and medical factors to the maximum possible degree, and the pertinent time factors related thereto. The leave shall not exceed the balance of the school term in which it commences and one (1) additional school term. Every effort shall be made to begin such leave at the commencement of the school term or semester. Every effort shall be made to have such leave terminate immediately prior to the start of a new school term.
