Joint Appointments. 22A.09 When sound academic reasons exist for doing so, a Faculty Member may be appointed jointly to two (2) or more Academic Departments or Faculties. Such appointments shall be at the same rank, of the same type and with the same salary rate, in the Academic Departments or Faculties concerned. When sound academic reasons exist for doing so, a Faculty Member may be appointed jointly to an Academic Department and to a non-academic unit within the University. The Faculty Member shall have his/her rank, type of appointment, academic component of salary, credit for previous experience, promotion eligibility and other academic conditions determined on the same basis as for other Faculty Members. If such Faculty Members commence working entirely in one (1) Academic Department, their salary shall be in accordance with this Collective Agreement.

Joint Appointments. For faculty holding joint appointments, recommendations from the secondary department or unit tenure committee, as well as recommendations of the chair of the secondary department, must be submitted to the home department by the date specified in Article 17.§10. The review letters from the secondary department and chair shall become part of the faculty member’s file; they must be considered by the primary department when formulating its tenure recommendations and in all subsequent reviews. Professional competence, professional recognition and professional service in both departments must be considered explicitly by both departments during the review process; for faculty specialists holding joint appointments, only professional competence and professional service are required for consideration. The home department shall take these recommendations into consideration in making its tenure recommendation (see Article 14.§2.3).

Joint Appointments. Joint appointments to two (2) departments may be made for faculty who have attained tenure. In such cases, the department in which the faculty member was awarded tenure shall be designated as the home department. The recommendation of a joint appointment may be initiated by the faculty member involved or the Department Chairperson of either the home department or the department with which the joint appointment shall be made (hereafter referred to as the joint department). In no case, however, shall a faculty member be given a joint appointment without his/her agreement. A faculty member desiring a joint appointment shall petition the Department Chairpersons of both departments, indicating in writing his/her reasons. The petition shall be reviewed by the DPC of each department and the recommendation of both DPCs and both Department Chairpersons shall be forwarded to the Xxxx. If the process is initiated by a Department Chairperson, the Chairperson shall prepare the petition and shall ascertain the agreement of the faculty member involved before it is referred to the joint department and the DPC. Should the Department Chairperson and DPC of either department concur in a recommendation against a joint appointment, the joint appointment shall not be made. Should there be disagreement between the DPC and Chairperson in any department, the joint appointee shall be given thirty (30) days to determine whether to proceed with or to withdraw her/his petition for joint appointment. Should the appointee wish to proceed with the petition, the case shall be referred to the FPB for recommendation to the appropriate Xxxx or Xxxxx, who shall make a recommendation to the Xxxxxxx. When the joint appointment is within one (1) unit, the decision of the Xxxx shall be final. If two (2) Deans disagree with concurring recommendations of the DPCs and Chairpersons, the case shall be referred to the UAB for recommendation to the Xxxxxxx. The Xxxxxxx’x decision shall be final. If joint appointment is approved, the faculty member shall have all rights of faculty in the home department and the home department shall have priority in teaching assignments and committee appointments. The faculty member may not represent two (2) departments on a unit committee and may sit on only one

At the time of the initial hire or appointment, a memorandum identifying how the promotion and/or tenure processes will be handled will be provided to the bargaining unit member. Upon request to the supervisors in each of the employing units, bargaining unit members whose appointments become joint appointments after the date of initial hire shall be provided with a memorandum identifying how the promotion and/or tenure processes will be handled.
