Sick Benefit Association. In the event of a lay off, benefits will cease on the date of lay off or separation if the disability started within two (2) months of the date of lay off or separation and notice of lay off or separation was given prior to the occurrence of the disability. In other cases, benefits will continue to a maximum of fifteen (15) weeks. Laid off employees who were members of the S.B.A. become eligible for benefits immediately upon resumption of work if within 12 calendar months from the date of lay off.

Employees who are laid off will receive a paid-up certificate indicating the expiry date of their coverage, (normally three months in advance). The Commission agrees not to seek reimbursement for any advance premiums paid on behalf of laid off employees. The Commission will commence payment of con- tributions three months after return to work for employees who had six months continuous service and who resume work within calendar months of the date of lay off. Coverage beyond the expiry date is the responsibility of the employee concerned.
