Administering Medications. The District shall make a reasonable effort to minimize teacher need to administer medications or to carry out medical procedures for students. When a teacher needs to administer medications or medical procedures for a student, the teacher shall be provided necessary information and training.

Administering Medications. Bargaining unit members shall be required to administer oral medications to students as part of their regular duties outside of lunch. During lunch hours, an additional staff person shall be assigned to the office to administer medication. If no volunteers outside of lunch hour are available, some bargaining unit members may be required to administer other types of medications. Medication may only be administered if the student has a completed authorization for medication form, signed by the doctor and parents, and on file with the school. The District is responsible for training employees to administer such medications, and shall ensure, except in cases of emergencies, that medication shall be administered with at least one other adult present while the medication is administered. The District will obtain and maintain liability insurance which specifically provides coverage for all members involved in such responsibilities. During emergency situations, members understand that they are required to administer whatever medications may be needed to remedy the situation.
Administering Medications. Under no circumstances shall teachers or other non-administrative school employees, except certified school nurses and non-certified registered professional nurses (which includes registered and licensed practical nurses), be asked to or required to administer medication to students. This shall not prohibit the school district from adopting guidelines for self-administration of medication by students. Administering Medications. Strict regulations govern the administration of medications in group child-care facilities. When a child requires prescription medication during the day, parents must obtain an “Authorization for Administration for Prescription” form available from the teachers. This form must be completed by the parent before staff members are permitted to administer the medication according to the physician’s orders. The preschool staff is not able to administer over-the-counter medications such as cough syrup, aspirin, vitamins, or other non-prescription medications, except where the medication has been prescribed by a doctor. Parents must have the child’s physician complete an “Authorization for Administration of Non-Prescription Medication” form, available from the teachers. This policy protects children, parents, and staff, as Early Childhood Educators are not formally qualified to make “judgment calls” as to when these medications are appropriate.
