Xxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxx. Inaugurated Resurrection as a deutero-Xxxxxxx Development In the late 1980s, A. J. M. Xxxxxxxxxx’x study on baptism and resurrection dealt a significant blow to the view we have just outlined.79 Xxxxxxxxxx took issue with the fact that New Testament scholarship had come to assume that inaugurated resurrection was both pre-Xxxxxxx and non-Xxxxxxx. He was unconvinced that the authors of Colossians and Ephesians, letters Xxxxxxxxxx considers pseudonymous, would revive a view which Xxxx had himself explicitly countered in Romans 6.1–14. Xxxxxxxxxx agreed that Xxxx places resurrection squarely in the future in Romans 6. However, he disputed the idea that Xxxx was countering an existing and overly enthusiastic view. Xxxx’s language in Romans 6 is, to say the least, ‘unguarded,’80 if he were actively countering an already existing view of present resurrection. What of Colossians and Ephesians? The dominant view prior to Xxxxxxxxxx’x work was that these deutero-Xxxxxxx epistles revived an earlier view of present resurrection, the same view that Xxxx had explicitly countered in Romans and 1 Corinthians. Wedderburn was unconvinced. Although he considers it to be deutero- Xxxxxxx, he dates Colossians to within Xxxx’s lifetime.81 This makes the theory that its author (a follower of Xxxx) was expounding an anti-Xxxxxxx view difficult to sustain. This could well have been in response to the broken parallelism of Romans 6.4, a parallelism which would not have taken a huge logical leap to complete. This could also have happened in response to the specific situation faced in Colossians particularly: in view of the ascetic teachings in the Colossian church, the author emphasises the completeness of what Xxxxxx had done. The author of Ephesians then would have drawn on Colossians but dropped its polemical aspect.
