Healthy. EATING We are an accredited National Healthy School and are committed to promoting and monitoring healthy food at break and lunch times. We continue to enhance our National Healthy School status, which is a government initiative set to raise education standards and to reduce health and social inequalities. Different teaching styles and learning opportunities are offered to pupils to develop their awareness and understanding of healthier eating and basic food safety practices, including regular opportunities to cook in the curriculum. SCHOOL MEALS We cook all our meals on site and all food meets the nutritional standards set by the government. The menus are sent home termly and are on our website. Children choose their meal at the start of the school day. For children in Reception, year 1 and year 2, meals are provided free of charge. Water is available in the dinner hall at lunchtime.
Healthy. Opportunities Pilot (the Pilot): The Enhanced Case Management and Other Services Pilot Program authorized by North Carolina’s 1115 Demonstration Waiver. The Pilot will evaluate the effectiveness of a set of select, evidence-based, non-medical interventions and the role of the Healthy Opportunities Network Leads on improving health outcomes and reducing healthcare costs for a subset of high-need Medicaid Members.
Healthy. We will continue to provide over 2 hours of physical activity per week in school and offer healthy out-of-school-hours clubs for pupils. We will teach and practice high standards of hygiene. We will provide the highest standards of care for pupils possible. We will work in partnership with Health Service professionals and will work with any health based programme prescribed as far as is practicable and compatible with our core mission of education. We will work with the Astley canteen to maximise how healthy pupils’ meals are and work with parents to maximise the use of healthy snacks and packed lunches. We will teach pupils to take an active role in looking after their own health as far as is possible. We hope to see better pupil behaviour and greater access to learning by improving pupils’ health. In partnership with the Health Service we will seek to meet all medical needs required to support pupils’ attendance at school.

I will strive to ensure that my child attends school clean, in uniform (if this poses a problem I will negotiate a solution with school), well rested, enjoying the healthiest diet possible and accessing physical activities outside of school (all to the maximum extent possible given his/her specific needs). I will seek to send in healthy snacks and/or packed lunches (if appropriate). I will strive to attend appointments and enact advice given by Health Professionals to promote the health of my child. I will support the healthy messages taught within school to actively involve my child in maximising their health. I hope to maximise my child’s happiness/mood/behaviour and greater access to learning by optimising my child’s health. I will keep my child at home (and inform school of the reason asap) or pick them up from school if they are too ill to learn effectively. This will also protect other pupils (some of whom are very vulnerable) and staff from acute risk of catching illnesses. Enjoy and Achieve I will promote school to my child as a positive opportunity and minimise their time away from school by seeking to avoid family holidays in school time. I will strive to ensure that my child attends school for each school day that they are well enough. I will support school in offering the widest positive life opportunities possible for my child providing appropriate precautions are taken to ensure that they can be assessed as low risk. I will support my child in completing and returning their homework or homework record as set by school. I will request more homework if I feel that it is beneficial and that I can support my child with this. Make a positive contribution I will celebrate the fact that I strive to offer my child as many opportunities to participate in family life, wider society and make friends as possible. Economic Well-being As my child grows towards adulthood I will promote their independence through communication and/or supporting them to complete self-help tasks. I will work in partnership in school where we agree on the benefits of my child learning standardised systems of communication such as speaking appropriately to unfamiliar adults or signing, symbol systems or objects of reference so that they can successfully communicate with a wider circle of people.
