The vehicle had also been carrying one other person, Xxxx’x 13-year-old niece Xxxx Xxxxxxxx, who was able to get off as the mishap occurred. Xxxxxxx and Jolene’s bodies were recovered Sunday by Bracebridge OPP and the OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit. Both had been wearing seatbelts when they went through the ice. Despite an immediate rescue attempt by Xxxx’x husband Xxxx Xxxxxxxx, who watched the tragedy unfold from his vehicle about 100 metres behind his wife’s, it was to no avail. Xxxxxxxx, a local contractor, jumped in as soon as he could to search for the pair. Another niece, Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx, 17, drove to seek out help. A second rescue attempt by the Township of Muskoka Lakes f ire department also came up short – the bodies having been in the water some 40 minutes prior to the department’s arrival. Rescue operations then gravely turned to a recovery effort. “Every precaution had been taken, but even that’s not enough at this time of year,” said Xxxx Xxxxxxxx’x father, Dr. Xxxxxx Xxxxxxxx, Monday. “It was an accident that should never have happened.” When it occurred, the group was travelling across the ice, returning from Red Leaves Resort where they had gone to get hot chocolate that afternoon. Making the situation even more devastating is the fact that members of the Xxxxxxxx clan had been celebrating a reunion at the time of the accident. Xx. Xxxxxxxx said family members were “coping fairly well.” “And Tony’s doing as well as you can expect,” he added. “Everybody’s been doing everything they can and then some. It’s a major tragedy.
