Novice. Loves the water but considers themselves a beginner and is looking for opportunities to gain practical experience after taking basic sailing/safety courses as well as reading books on boating.  A Crewmember has sailed before, is familiar with common boat terms and, with proper direction, can perform basic boating tasks.  A First Mate has sailed frequently with SUS and/or other boats AND can sail/power a yacht back to the dock if the captain is incapacitated.  A Skipper can handle his/her yacht in most conditions encountered on Long Island Sound. He/She keeps the yacht in good and safe condition, is capable/willing to demonstrate good and prudent seamanship, and prepared to help improve the skills of the crew on board.

MASTER: This class will be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years on the day of the show, and who have won the 10 first place wins in an Open class with competition to be eligible to enter the Limited Class Competition. The calendar for this class will be consistent with the eligibility dates for the AKC Eukanuba National Championship. All Juniors meeting the criteria for this class are required to enter the Master Class and may change their entry the day of the show if entries have already closed. Once the eligibility time frame for that year has passed all participants return to the Open Class to complete for the following year. BEST JUNIOR HANDLER: The Junior Handler placed first in each of the regular Junior Showmanship Classes, if undefeated in any other Junior Showmanship Class at that show, shall automatically be eligible to compete for this prize.
