Study patterns Clause Samples

The "Study patterns" clause defines the rules and expectations for analyzing or reviewing patterns within a particular context, such as research, data analysis, or intellectual property. Typically, this clause outlines the methods by which patterns are to be identified, documented, and evaluated, and may specify the scope of permissible study or the confidentiality of findings. Its core practical function is to ensure that the process of studying patterns is conducted systematically and transparently, thereby promoting consistency and reliability in the results or conclusions drawn from such studies.
Study patterns. On average, students spend about 32 hours a week on their academic work, almost evenly split between time spent in class (15 hours per week, on average) and out of class (18 hours per week, on average). 10 or fewer 30% 34% 31% 27% 40% 11 to 15 39% 38% 38% 40% 31% 16 to 20 18% 14% 18% 19% 11% 21 to 30 10% 10% 10% 9% 12% More than 30 4% 4% 4% 4% 5% Average number of hours 14.5 14.1 14.4 14.9 13.9 10 or fewer 39% 43% 38% 37% 43% 11 to 15 17% 16% 16% 19% 17% 16 to 20 17% 16% 17% 16% 13% 21 to 30 16% 15% 16% 17% 19% More than 30 12% 10% 13% 11% 10% Average number of hours 17.9 16.6 18.4 18.0 16.9 15 or fewer 14% 16% 14% 12% 19% 16 to 20 11% 12% 11% 10% 12% 21 to 30 28% 29% 27% 28% 27% 31 to 40 22% 20% 21% 24% 18% More than 40 25% 22% 26% 25% 24% Average number of hours 32.4 30.6 32.8 32.9 30.8 35.5 hours per week on academic activities (in and out of class) compared to 31.1 hours for those with a B-, B, or B+ average and 29.2 hours for those with a C+ or lower average. This difference is largely due to a difference in time spent on academic activities outside of class, as time spent decreases as grade decreases — from 20.8 hours for those with an A- or higher average down to 14.9 hours for those with a C+ or lower average.
Study patterns. We asked students about the time they spend studying and doing other academic work. As Table 24 shows, the typical student spends about 32 hours per week on academic activities.  On average, students report spending about 15 hours in class and labs each week, and another 17 hours on academic work outside class. 10 or fewer 28% 28% 28% 24% 16% 11 to 15 35% 35% 38% 32% 33% 16 to 20 22% 22% 19% 24% 33% 21 to 30 12% 12% 11% 16% 16% More than 30 3% 3% 3% 4% 2% Average number of hours 14.6 14.3 14.7 15.7 16.7 10 or fewer 40% 41% 38% 39% 35% 11 to 15 17% 17% 17% 17% 14% 16 to 20 17% 17% 17% 15% 20% 21 to 30 16% 16% 17% 17% 19% More than 30 10% 10% 12% 11% 13% Average number of hours 17.2 16.9 17.9 17.8 19.0 15 or fewer 14% 15% 13% 12% 8% 16 to 20 12% 11% 13% 11% 9% 21 to 30 28% 28% 27% 26% 27% 31 to 40 22% 23% 22% 22% 27% More than 40 24% 23% 26% 28% 30% Average number of hours 31.8 31.2 32.6 33.5 35.7 As one would expect, full-time students spend more time than part-time students on their academic work in and out of class. On average, full-time students (34 hours) spend about double the amount of time on academic work in and out of class than part-time students (17 hours). However, the hours spent outside of class relative to those spent in class are much higher for part-time students (2.2 hours outside of class for every hour in class) than full-time students (1.1 hours outside of class for every hour in class). The time students devote to their academic work varies by their discipline.  On average, those in Engineering programs spend the most total time on their academics, both in and out of class. In total, they average about 42 hours per week on academics. No other discipline averages more than 39 hours per week (next highest is Professional program students at just under 39 hours).  Students in Business programs spend the least total time on academics (28 hours per week), and average the least hours in and outside of class. Study patterns. On average, students spend about 32 hours a week on their academic work, almost evenly split between time spent in class (15 hours per week, on average) and out of class (17 hours per week, on average). Group 3 students spend about 20% more time on their academic work outside of class per week (19.6 hours), compared to students in Group 2 (16.4 hours) or Group 1 (15.5) universities. 10 or fewer 25% 29% 27% 16% 41% 11 to 15 40% 38% 39% 45% 33% 16 to 20 20% 18% 20% 23% 15% 21 to 30 12% 12% 12% 13% 8% More than 30 3% 3% 3% 3% 2% Average number of hours 15.0 14.7 14.8 16.0 12.9 10 or fewer 41% 47% 42% 31% 58% 11 to 15 17% 16% 17% 18% 15% 16 to 20 17% 16% 16% 18% 13% 21 to 30 15% 13% 15% 19% 8% More than 30 10% 7% 9% 14% 5% Average number of hours 16.8 15.5 16.4 19.6 12.9 15 or fewer 12% 14% 12% 8% 25% 16 to 20 12% 15% 13% 8% 17% 21 to 30 30% 31% 31% 27% 31% 31 to 40 23% 22% 22% 25% 16% More than 40 23% 19% 22% 31% 11% Average number of hours 31.8 30.1 31.2 35.6 25.7 Difference by university grades. On average, the lower a students’ university grade, the less time they spend on academic activities outside of class. Those with an average grade of A- or higher spend about 19.3 hours per week on academics outside of class, compared to 16.0 hours for those with a B- to B+ average and 14.6 hours for those with a C+ or lower average. Conversely, time spent in class ranges from 15.8 hours for those with an A- or higher down to 14.1 hours for those with a C+ or lower.
Study patterns. On average, students spend about 32 hours a week on their academic work, almost evenly split between time spent in class (15 hours per week, on average) and out of class (17 hours per week, on average). Group 3 students spent more time on their academic work, both in and out of class, compared to Group 1 and Group 2 students. This difference is likely driven by the fact that Group 3 students were most likely to be studying full-time. 10 or fewer 25% 37% 25% 16% 35% 11 to 15 37% 32% 41% 35% 35% 16 to 20 21% 17% 20% 26% 15% 21 to 30 14% 11% 12% 19% 11% More than 30 3% 3% 3% 4% 4% Average number of hours 15.2 13.0 14.9 17.1 13.8 10 or fewer 42% 49% 45% 34% 47% 11 to 15 17% 17% 17% 17% 17% 16 to 20 16% 15% 16% 18% 15% 21 to 30 15% 13% 13% 18% 14% More than 30 10% 7% 9% 12% 6% Average number of hours 16.8 15.0 16.1 18.9 15.1 15 or fewer 13% 22% 13% 7% 18% 16 to 20 12% 14% 14% 9% 15% 21 to 30 29% 28% 32% 27% 31% 31 to 40 22% 19% 21% 26% 18% More than 40 24% 18% 21% 31% 19% Average number of hours 32.0 28.0 31.0 36.0 29.0
