Progression to employment and postgraduate study A key commitment in our Corporate Plan is to develop graduates who are equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to achieve their career goals and contribute to their local communities. From 2015-16 we have made significant investment in additional staffing to reflect this. We have identified a senior academic lead for employability and student success in each of our Schools to drive forward the integration of employability within our curricula and teaching practices. In addition we have allocated a Careers Consultant to each academic School and have established a Student Success Committee in each School. Academic staff and students are now supported by a larger central employability support team, including a dedicated work placements team. Through the delivery of our Employability Strategy we will embed employability within the curriculum and introduce an online portfolio system which will allow staff and students to track engagement with key activities such as career planning and skills development workshops, CV building, interview practice, volunteering and general work experience including placements. We have successfully piloted an institutional Professional Development Award that recognises student success in, and commitment to, developing and evidencing graduate competencies. The award encourages our students to engage with co-curricular enrichment opportunities and supports them to articulate the personal and professional development gained through a diverse range of social, cultural and sporting activities. Feedback on the pilot was uniformly positive with graduates of the award commenting that their confidence as an aspiring graduate professional had grown from a pre-award rating of 53.8% to 86.2% post award. Confidence in communication skills increased from 64.6% to 90.8%. Participation in the award is heavily aligned to attendance at the UEL Skills Academy sessions primarily delivered by external professionals on the competencies most prized by graduate employers. Academy sessions are also open to students not signing up to the award and between June 2015 and Mar 2016 over 900 students attended sessions with 95% feeding back that their confidence in the skill being addressed in the session had increased. We are also about to launch our new application scoring software tool, offering students their “graduate score”, referencing the quality of their written applications when competing for graduate jobs and indicating their likeliho...
