Career change. If the employee, despite all efforts, fails to acquire the required competencies, knowledge, skills and behaviour, or if it is better for the employee’s sustainable employability to take up another position, the employee and the employer will jointly seek a solution. In the assessment, the level of performance is at least as important as complying with certificate requirements.

Career change. A teacher may be granted a leave of absence for up to a maximum of one (1) year for the purpose of exploring the possibility of making a "career change". Teaching in another public school system shall not be considered a career change unless the employment is out of state. Requests for career leaves shall be submitted prior to May 1st.
Career change. A teacher with professional teacher status who has taught in Wilmington for more than five consecutive years may be granted a leave of absence without pay for one school year to explore a career change. Applications for such leave must be filed in writing with the Superintendent no later than the February 1st preceding the September of the academic year for which the leave is requested. Not more than two persons shall be granted such leave in any one school year. Persons on leave must notify the Superintendent in writing by March 15th of the year in which they are on leave if they intend to return. The School Department will provide notice of this requirement by sending a certified letter to the last known address on record at the School Department. Failure to provide such notice of intention to return will be deemed a resignation.
