Definition of Teaching. Teaching is defined as the responsibility for the research, design, preparation, coordination, delivery, grading, evaluation, assessment and supervision of scheduled curriculum course content, and, for Regular Faculty Members, curriculum development. Teaching includes presentation, whether through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, individual or group discussion, supervision of students’ work, or other means by which students learn.

Definition of Teaching. Direct Teaching brings Faculty and students into direct instructional relationships. Direct Teaching includes, but is not limited to:  classroom, laboratory, studios, clinics, workshops, seminars, rehearsals, practicums, individualized lessons, field work, independent study, independent research, directed readings, and/or online/distance instruction;  teaching and preparing for courses with assigned credit and/or contact hours in the current academic term, including zero-credit courses;  supervision of independent readings, research, other independent studies, theses and dissertations;  supervision of internships, clinical experience, and/or student teaching;  evaluation of student progress;  holding office hours or conferencing with students; and  answering student messages. Indirect Teaching includes all activities closely related to degree-credit teaching but not included in “Direct Teaching.” Indirect Teaching includes, but is not limited to:  supervision of others’ teaching (such as Non-tenure Track Faculty or Teaching Assistants);  curriculum development;  revision or redesign of an existing course;  preparation of course outlines and/or syllabi;  academic advisement and student mentoring, when applicable;  instructional, laboratory, clinic, and/or studio materials procurement and maintenance;  serving as a committee member for thesis, dissertation, or other capstone experience;  efforts devoted to such academic unit-sponsored activities as research presentations or art, debate, drama, or music performances by students;  and professional development related to teaching.

Supervising a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis (governed by FSS Examination Board regulations) is regarded as teaching, even when the research carried out for the Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis is directly relevant to the PhD candidate’s own research or specific area of expertise.
