Greenland. The Greenland Climate Network (GC-Net) consists of 18 Automated Weather Stations (AWS) distributed over the Greenland ice sheet. The GC-Net aims at monitoring climatological and glaciological parameters at various locations on the ice sheet. The measured parameters include accumulation rate and snowpack conductive heat flux, surface energy and mass balance. Currently, the GC-NET archive contains more than 50 station years of measurements. These data have been quality controlled and calibrated. The Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE) (xxx.xxxxxxx.xx) is operated by GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland). 25 Automatic Weather Stations exist in Greenland, some of these supported by additional projects (e.g. the Greenland Analogue Project (GAP) and the Greenland Climate Research Centre (GCRC).

Greenland. Greenland had become part of the EC in 1973 when it was still an integral part of Denmark. The accession referendum which had been held in the entire Kingdom of Denmark showed that 70% of the Greenlanders did not want to join the EC, but as the majority of the Danish population as a whole voted in favour of accession, the Kingdom of Denmark became member of the EC as a whole. After Greenland achieved its Home Rule in 1979,183 another referen- dum was held in 1982 on the question whether it should leave the EC. The Inuit population of Greenland resented the fact that European fishermen had obtained generous catch quota in Greenland’s fishing grounds, which were the mainstay of the island’s economy, and were unhappy about the EC’s decision to ban seal hunting.184 Nonetheless, the opposition to the EC had become smaller since 1973, with only 52 percent of the Greenlanders voting in favour of leaving the EC. Denmark respected the outcome of the referendum, and requested the other member states to cooperate in granting Greenland’s wish. Many member states were not keen on Greenland’s departure, because the island’s fishing grounds were of considerable importance to the EC. The Danish proposal to grant the island OCT status also met with opposition because the territory was considerably wealthier than the average OCT.185 After ‘a strenuous and time-consuming process’,186 an agreement was reached on a treaty of withdrawal for Greenland,187 which states in its Preamble that, whilst OCT status is deemed to provide an appropriate framework, ‘additional specific provisions are needed to cater for Greenland’. A new Article was added to Part IV of the EC Treaty which provides that Part IV applies to Green-

Greenland. Today, on April 16th, Den- mark celebrates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Mar- xxxxxx XX. The royal family has a very close and warm rela- tionship with Greenland and the Greenlandic people. The Queen, who visits Greenland on a regular basis, has stated that Greenland has a very spe- cial place in her heart. His Royal Highness Crown Xxxxxx Xxxxxxxx has spent 6 months in Northern Greenland, and his two youngest children (twins) were given Greenlan- dic names. Most Japanese people know of Greenland, but few know very much about Greenland. Fortunately, there will be sev- eral chances to learn more about this vast and immense- ly beautiful island later this year. From September 4th to November 18th an exhibition about Greenland will be held at the National Museum for Ethnology in Osaka, and from December 4th to 27th at Hill- side Terrace in Daikanyama, Tokyo. It is my hope that many Japanese people will take the opportunity to learn more about Greenland, and per- haps will find it as intriguing as Her Majesty.
