Ecosystem Management. From an ecosystem management viewpoint, a goal of the successful wine grape grower is to optimize the combination of individual, population, community, and ecosystem conditions, resources, interactions and process to produce acceptable yields of quality fruit. Ideally, this is done while minimizing negative impacts and maximizing positive impacts on ecological inputs. Element 1- Ecosystem Process and Management Yes No N/A
Ecosystem Management. SOURCE GOVERNMENT OBJECTIVE Land Act Section 93.4, OGMA Order for the KLRMP area (March 5, 2013) a) Conserve biodiversity by retaining old forest values and attributes, or rare features within the OGMAs across the landscape units over time. b) Maintain all timber within OGMAs except as required to accommodate the following purposes: (a) to prevent the spread of insect infestations or diseases that pose a significant threat to forested areas external to the OGMA; (b) to address safety hazards associated with primary forest activities; (c) to provide for guyline clearances and tailhold anchors; (d) to address fuel management concerns and related safety hazards; (e) to provide road access where no alternative practicable option for road location exists; or (f) to facilitate timber harvesting that will result in operationally practicable cutblock boundaries. c) Primary forest activities conducted for the purposes under Section 2 must: (a) be conducted to the minimum extent necessary to accommodate the purpose; and (b) not exceed the lesser of two hectares or 10% of an individual OGMA polygon per 20 year time period.
Ecosystem Management. Monitoring of the ocean environment requires not only physical but also ecosystem models. Significant advances have been made in recent years in understanding and modelling the complex processes in ecosystems, ranging from the bio-geochemical processes governing the global carbon cycle (uptake, sequestration, and release) and other gas exchanges, to the coastal ecosystems describing water quality, primary production or algal blooms. The performance of ecosystem models is strongly predicated on the realism of the underlying physics, which in turn depend on good observations. Well-managed seascapes are the basis of sustainable development and human security. They are critical to address underlying causes of biodiversity loss. Ecosystem management requires a good knowledge of the structure and function of the communities of organisms inhabiting the pelagic and benthic environments of the deep ocean extending from the edge of the continental shelf to the depths of the deepest trenches. The paucity of sampling and monitoring of this vast area, combined with the increasing demands on open ocean resources require extensive study of this domain. Deep sea observatories are powerful instruments to approach some critical points: - spatial and temporal variability in the deep ocean of organisms, - seasonally and interannually variability of food supply, - shifts in populations of megafauna, - description of unknown species of organisms. They will contribute to resolve questions essential to deep ecosystem management:
