The Study Regions. The study regions include the high potential areas of intervention of USAID projects and the Lac Alaotra region, given its role in the supply of food crops to the major urban centers of Madagascar and Vakinankaratra. The specialization in export crops is to a certain extent explained by tradition, and is often conducted as a gathering system. With the exception of the plains of Marovay which are specialized in rice, the region of North West allows diversified agriculture on large areas on tanety and baibo. This is one of the reasons for agribusiness enterprises to get involved into production, in partnership with farmers and in order to ensure a stable supply of raw materials. The input distributors in this region are mostly development organizations. The region of Lac Alaotra is a large plain located in the region of Middle East of Madagascar.
