Overseas banks involved in the processing and clearance of International Transfers are referred to as intermediary or correspondent banks. These banks generally charge fees for processing and clearing an International Transfer and these fees vary between correspondent banks and countries/territories. Some receiving countries may involve more than one correspondent bank for clearance of funds. Receiving Bank fees Some receiving banks may also charge a fee for receiving your payment, and this charge is usually deducted from the payment amount before final payment to the beneficiary. Correspondent Bank fees Correspondent bank fees are in addition to the International Transfer fee you pay HSBC. For outward payments you can select to pay all charges, this only covers charges raised by HSBC and the correspondent bank, in these cases HSBC will process the transaction with the charge type ‘OUR’; however, it is important to note that some local country clearing systems do not recognise this charge type, and additional fees may pass on to your beneficiary. For example, correspondent banks in the USA may change the charge type from ‘OUR’ to ‘SHA’ (where the charges are shared between the sender and the beneficiary) or ‘BEN’ (where the charges are paid entirely by the beneficiary) when routing the payment to the final beneficiary bank.
