  • Counseling Services Counseling is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the per- sonalities of the counselor and client, and the particular problems you are experiencing. There are many different methods I may use to deal with problems you want to address. Counseling calls for an active effort on your part. It is most successful when you work on things we talk about during our sessions and in between sessions. Counseling can have benefits and risks. Since it often involves discussing unpleasant as- pects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustra- tion, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, counseling has been shown to have many benefits. It often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant re- ductions in feelings of distress. Often, with counseling, people know themselves better and live happier, more fulfilling lives. There are no guarantees of what you will experience. COUNSELING SESSIONS Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. During this time, we can both decide if I am the best person to provide the services you need in order to meet your treat- ment goals. I will offer my impressions of what our work will include and make suggestions for a treatment plan. Please evaluate this information and decide whether you feel comfortable work- ing with me. Counseling involves a large commitment of time, money, and energy, so be mindful about the therapist you choose. If you have questions about my procedures, we can discuss them at any time. If your doubts persist, you may consult with another mental health professional for a second opinion. If we work together, I will usually schedule one 50-minute session per week at a time we agree on, although sessions may be longer or more frequent. Once an appointment is sched- uled, you will be expected to pay for it unless you provide at least 24 hours advance notice of cancellation. Please note that insurance companies do not provide reimbursement for cancelled sessions. If possible, I will find another time to reschedule your appointment.
