Land use and land cover in Matara district The prominent land use type in Matara district is home gardens with the percentage of 23.33. Considerable amount of other features as mangroves, marshes, roads, rivers and etc. are also there to identify with in the district. Apart from home gardens tea and paddy are the prominent agricultural production within the district with the percentage of 11.28 and 10.95 respectively. 8.88 percent of the total land extend has covered with forest area and 3.44 percent with scrubs. Coconut and rubber cultivation in the district is little compared with tea and paddy, with area extend of 4.56 and 3.96 percent respectively.
