Common use of Emergency Service Leave Clause in Contracts

Emergency Service Leave. A bargaining unit member who is an EMT-basic, EMT-I, first responder, paramedic, or volunteer firefighter will receive up to forty (40) hours of leave with pay each calendar year to use during those hours when the employee is absent from work in order to provide emergency medical service or fire-fighting service. In order to be eligible, a bargaining unit member will submit to his/her supervisor a written notification signed by the chief of the volunteer fire department, or medical director, with which the employee serves. Such paid leave shall be available during the term of this Agreement only to the three most senior eligible bargaining unit members, based upon the University’s seniority list, employed on or before August 16, 2011. All other bargaining unit members may be granted such leave without pay or vacation leave not to exceed forty (40) hours each calendar year. The University will waive any notice requirements for using vacation leave for this purpose, provided operational necessity is not impaired.
