Optionality. 1st Person Plural Subjects The preceding sections have established that verb agreement is defective if the subject is 2nd or 3rd person and controlled by the object if the subject is 1st person singular. A final complication arises if the subject is 1st person plural. In this case, the verb optionally either shows defective agreement with the subject or object agreement. These two options are illustrated in (8). In (8a) agreement is controlled by the subject and limited to person and number, as in configurations containing 2nd or 3rd person subjects. In (8b), by contrast, it is the object that triggers verb agreement, parallel to the state of affairs for 1st singular subjects.
