Major Study Designs Sample Clauses

Major Study Designs. The health effects of air pollutants can be investigated via short (acute) and long term (chronic) exposures and the most common study designs are the time series and cohort studies respectively. Time-series examine the associations between exposure to air pollutants and morbidity and/or mortality by utilising repeated observations of the dependent and the independent variables within a defined population and geographical area [168]. Typically, data are collected at regular time intervals (x.x. xxxxx NO2 levels and hospital admissions) and the aim is to delineate short term associations [169]. A major advantage of these studies is that they don’t need to control for personal habits such as smoking and eating habits because they are not associated with air pollution levels and they do not vary from day to day [170]. However, such studies have to control for meteorological events and co-varying air pollutants [133]. Cohort studies are a type of longitudinal study, participants are selected based on their exposure status and are followed to monitor the development of a specific health effect (e.g. investigating mortality on a long-term basis in relation to an indicator of average exposure to NO2) and can be conducted retrospectively or prospectively [171]. A more rudimental approach is offered by cross-sectional studies [168] as data are collected from different participant groups from areas with different levels of air pollution at one time period.
