Liturgy. The deacon shall perform the full and proper liturgical functions of a deacon as define in the rubrics of the Book of Common Prayer and approved supplemental liturgies.
Liturgy. Whose Work? Liturgy is a hybrid notion with multiple layers of meaning and usage. The semantic origins of the term λειτουργία are in Greece. In the classical Greek, λειτουργία did not connote a specifically and exclusively religious or ritual activity, but denoted a work (έργον) vicariously performed as public service on behalf of the people (λαος). Projects intended for the common good in various areas such as education, 20 Xxxxxx, Women’s Ways of Worship, 153. defense, and entertainment were called λειτουργία.21 The “religious turn” of λειτουργία occurred when it was used in the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (LXX, Septuagint) to denote the ritual worship and sacerdotal services in the temple. In the New Testament, λειτουργία has been used to refer to sacerdotal ministry of priests and Xxxxxx (Lk.1:23, Heb.8:2, 8:6, 9:21), to the ministry of proclaiming the Gospel (Rom.15:16), to charitable activity on behalf of the needy (2.Cor.9:12), to the worship of God (Acts 13:2), and even to the service of angels (Heb.1:7, 14). Gradually λειτουργία was used in a more narrowly specified way to describe in the Eastern Christian milieu the eucharistic rite – “the Divine Liturgy.” In the West, λειτουργία returned after a long period as liturgia, to be actively used in the aftermath of the Reformation and its reforms of public worship and to be substituted for the Mass among the Protestants, while also being used more widely as the term to denote the rites or orders of Christian practices of worship. Often the meaning of λειτουργία has been rendered as the “work of the people,” comprising the doxological action of the church in its public worship. Two things are rather clear about liturgy: First, the polysemy of liturgy suggests a remarkably multifarious field of complementary actions of Xxxxx Xxxxxx and people, ranging from Xxxxxx’x priestly work as a λειτουργος (Heb. 8:6) performing the redemptive opus Dei, to the service of Xxxxxx’x followers enmeshed in relations between individuals, community, and state. Liturgy is an opus, divine and human, with fluidly overlapping causalities, agencies, orientations, scopes, and goals within the economy of

The functions may include Proclaiming the Gospel, Bidding the Creed, the Prayers of the People, and the Confession, Assisting at and preparing the Table at the Eucharist, Sending Forth the Eucharistic Visitors, Dismissing the People, Preaching on a regular basis and other agreed upon functions appropriate to the deacon. So-called “deacons’ masses” are expressly prohibited, unless the prior permission of the xxxxxx has been obtained (BCP p. 408).

The functions may include Proclaiming the Gospel, Bidding the Creed, the Prayers of the People, and the Confession, Assisting at and preparing the Table at the Eucharist, Sending Forth the Eucharistic Visitors, Dismissing the People, Preaching on a regular basis and other agreed upon functions consistent with his/her call to the order of the deacon.

The functions shall include: Proclaiming the Gospel; Proclaiming the Exultet at the Great Xxxxx of Easter; Bidding the Creed, the Prayers of the People, and the Confession; Assisting at and preparing the Table at the Eucharist,; Sending Forth the Eucharis- tic Visitors; and Dismissing the People. It may include bidding the Lord’s Prayer, and other agreed upon functions appropriate to the deacon. Preaching on a regular basis and providing for the Prayers of the People are both strongly encouraged. Pursuant to the rubrics in the BCP, So-called “Mass of the Pre-concecrated” are expressly prohibited, unless the prior permission of the xxxxxx has been obtained (BCP p. 408).
