PHEP supports a CDC field scientist who works with local staff to improve surveillance and strengthen opioid crisis preparedness and response. The scientist served as the state opioid operational command center’s chief planner, and structured the command center based on the National Incident Management System. She worked with local staff to establish a method for collecting, analyzing, and sharing drug- related data and monitoring real-time trends in overdoses or deaths. Thanks to PHEP, the state now has an enhanced surveillance system and overarching coordination plan helping Maryland more strategically respond to the devastating opioid epidemic. CDC identified 15 public health preparedness capabilities critical to public health preparedness.
