Melchizedek definition

Melchizedek. The name means “king of righteousness” or “my king is righteous” (BDB 575, similar to Josh. 10:1; Zedek may relate to a Canaanite astral god, Zedek). The name (Melchizedek) appears only here and in Ps. 110:4 in the OT. The Psalm 110 passage caused the Dead Sea Scrolls community to expect two Messiahs.

Melchizedek literally means “king of righteousness”. The name comes from the Hebrew words “melek” (king) and “tzedek” (righteousness). We first meet him in Genesis 14 on the way back from rescuing Abraham’s nephew Lot from some kings who kidnapped him. He brought out bread and wine (how familiar!) and blesses Abraham.   • One is first introduced to the concept of a priest in the book of Genesis, in the offering of tithes to Melchizedek by Abram (Gen 14:17-20).
