Common use of Rotation of Shifts Clause in Contracts

Rotation of Shifts. The Medical Center and the Association concur that shift rotation shall be avoided to the extent feasible. All nurses who work straight shifts shall, regardless of assignment, remain on straight shifts unless the nurse consents to work a rotating shift or as provided in 6.13.1 below. Nurses who work a rotating shift shall not be rotated to a different shift more frequently than on a monthly basis except as provided in 6.13.1 below. A “rotating shift” is a shift that rotates between days, evenings and/or night shifts. This section shall not apply to changing start times within an established shift. Nurses whose shift is designated “variable” will, when possible, work their preferred shift. When unit needs require that a nurse works a non-preferred shift, the nurse will rotate off their preferred shift one schedule (usually a 4-week schedule) at a time, using a rotating system that is transparent to all variable shift nurses on each unit. Variable shift staff nurses that must rotate off their preferred shift shall be rotated on an equitable basis beginning with the least senior nurse. After their turn at rotating off their preferred shift, the nurse then goes to the bottom of the list. The Employer strives to meet the goal of ensuring variable shift positions are less than twenty percent (20%) of FTEs, except in extenuating circumstances.
