PACIS II Subsystems Sample Clauses

PACIS II Subsystems. 3.2.1 Public Address (PA) The Public Address (PA) subsystem enables NYCT to communicate with passengers via speakers located at each subway station. Using these speakers, NYCT is able to broadcast both manual (pre-recorded) messages as well as live (ad-hoc) messages in order to provide passengers with timely, relevant information. These speakers are deployed in a manner that provides adequate volume and clarity throughout the station and are grouped into functional zones, based on the unique needs of each station. (For example, northbound platform, southbound platform, mezzanine, etc.) Public address announcements can then be broadcast to any or all zones at the NYCT operator’s discretion. In stations that can be acoustically divided (such as those with multiple levels or separated by long passages), the PA subsystem is able to broadcast different messages in different zones simultaneously. The PA subsystem also uses noise-sensing microphones to ensure that PA messages can be heard by passengers. Volume is increased automatically (to an upper threshold) to ensure that messages can be clearly heard and understood. And, if a train is just entering the station and creating high noise levels, for example, the announcement is automatically delayed until the noise level drops to an acceptable level. The placement of noise-sensing microphones within each station is determined by the unique needs of that station. In general, the public address system is used to reinforce the message displayed on the customer information screens. Messages about major service disruptions, priority safety issues, emergencies, and unusual service patterns displayed on the customer information screens are simultaneously broadcast via public address. This feature supports NYCT’s compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements. Note that in addition to speakers and microphones, the PA subsystem uses other hardware and software components (controllers, etc.), located at the RCC and at each station. For more detail concerning PA hardware, please refer to Chapter 4, PACIS II Hardware. For more detail concerning the PA software, please refer to Chapter 6, Application Software.
