DICOM means the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine technical protocols.
DICOM means Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine and is the industry standard for transferring radiological images and other medical information between computers. Patterned after the Open System Interconnection of the International Standards Organization, DICOM enables digital communication between diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and systems from various manufacturers.

It includes a file format definition and a network communications protocol.
