Effect Of Topic Sample Clauses

Effect Of Topic. The next aspect that influenced the students’ WTC was the topic of discussion, Some students agreed that controversial topic made them more willing to communicate the issue. The topic of conversation, which is also indicated in XxxXxxxxx et al (1998) WTC theory (Xxxxx X), is critical in determining whether or not, learners are willing or unwilling to communicate. To students, the most important aspects of a topic are topic familiarity, topic interest, and topic preparedness. Furthermore, students tend to debate a contentious issue as well as a topic with which they are more familiar. It goes without saying that the sort of issue under consideration has a significant impact on the ease of language use. Lack of information about a topic and familiarity with the register reduces one's linguistic self-confidence, whereas lack of knowledge about a topic and familiarity with the register causes one to prevent communication (XxxXxxxxx et al.1998). According to Xxxx (2005), some topics may elicit a higher ―responsibility‖ to participate; that is, one feels compelled to examine a topic because it is intrinsically and instrumentally fascinating to him or her. Xxx (2006), on the other hand, recommends that sensitive topics should be avoid because they may inhibit students' WTC. Finally, a lack of understanding, motivation, and preparation for a particular issue can dramatically influence one's perceived competence since one thinks he or she has nothing to add and so prefers to keep silent. Such emotional limitations can significantly diminish one's willingness to talk.
