Cross-Cutting and Administrative. Gender A significant obstacle for women farmers is access to inputs because cultural norms restrict them to the farm and keep them from controlling their finances and business interactions. The cultural norms in rural Kaduna present challenges in engaging sufficient numbers of women to produce adequate crops for purchase. The project will enhance access to products, information, and educational materials that are appropriate and realistic for their intended audiences. During year 1, a total of 4,448 female farmers and laborers were trained, comprised 25% of the total beneficiaries. Building on the work conducted in identifying Women Farmer Associations (WFAs) in year 1, in year 2 the focus will be on identifying more WFAs that can be brought into the program. Once identified, the project will provide them with culturally appropriate trainings that improve their production practices at the farm level and ensure they are able to produce maize and soybeans that meet the required contaminant thresholds. The project will also provide extensive post-harvest and storage trainings that can improve the quality of their crops. During year 1, the project prioritized the recruitment of female NYSC volunteers and EAs (20 of 59 NYSC volunteers are female, 12 of 76 EAs are female) to ensure project trainings for female farmers and associations are culturally appropriate. In addition, much of the cleaning done by aggregators prior to storage is done by hand, with women making up the majority of these laborers. While the project will work with aggregators to promote the procurement of mechanical cleaners and threshers, those that are not willing to invest in this equipment will receive laborer training on best practices for cleaning to reduce contamination.

Cross-Cutting and Administrative. Gender During the first and second year, 10,988 (32.7% of the total) female beneficiaries were trainedon different methods of contaminant mitigation. The project team made a deliberate effort to identify and register female farmers. In the third year, the project will maintain all female beneficiaries and take steps to continue to improve their capacity and ensure full benefit of the gains of the project. The project team will conduct supportive supervision visits on safe harvesting to female farmers on threshing, sorting, packaging, cleaning, and storage of grains. The team will emphasize the importance of effective cleaning and sorting of grains traditionally done by women at the collection centers to minimize aluminum in soybeans and fumonisins in maize.
