Explaining definition

Explaining means to identify, describe, clarify, or interpret something. One may explain, for example, the causes of events, the meaning or significance of events and ideas, or the reasons for various acts or positions.
Explaining means ‘finding the causes.’ Explaining a social phenomenon means identifying its cause(s). In most cases, the explanation takes the form of a more or less complicated set of causal statements. The relations between the elements of the set can be more or less complex; they can be linear, recursive, include feedback loops, and so on. The set is what we usually call a ‘social mechanism’ (SM). A SM is, in other words, the well-articulated set of causes responsible for a given social phenomenon. With the exception of typical simple ones, SMs tend to be idiosyncratic and singular.
Explaining means, among other things, that where present, relations between phenomena are indicated.

More Definitions of Explaining

Explaining essentially means representing and decom- posing a complex and global mechanism in terms of a set of simpler sub-mechanisms. The explanation is based here on a recursive decomposition of the joint distribution of the variables entering the statistical analysis. This re- cursive decomposition is equivalent to a systematic mar- ginal-conditional decomposition according to a specific ordering of the variables. For example, if one considers a vector of variables, the joint distribution can be written as: P(X1, … Xp)= P(X1)P(X2 | X1) … P(Xp | X1 … Xp-1). Thus,
