Individuals who are officially registered as full-time students in a Master's or Doctoral course of a graduate school outside Japan at the time of participation in the program (excluding non-degree students)* and planning to write their Master's or Doctoral dissertation on a subject related to Japan and need to learn the Japanese language in order to carry out the research necessary to accomplish that purpose.

Postgraduate Doctoral Under Regulation 15(2ZA), loans taken out by borrowers for a Postgraduate Doctoral course starting on or after 1 August 2018 will enter repayment status on whichever of the following dates occurs first: • The start of the tax year following the borrower’s withdrawal from or completion ofthe course (Regulation 15(2ZA)(b)(i)) or • The start of the tax year after 4 years have elapsed since the first day of the first AY of the course (Regulation 15(2ZA)(b)(ii)).

The accumulated period a student can leave during school is two years in total for a Master course student and threeyears in total for a Doctoral course student, regardless of the reasons of absence nor whether it is a continuous or intermissive leave.
If a student has obtained more than the required credits to finish the Master course, these excess credits can be added to the Doctoral course credits for up to 10 credits in total through the permission of his/her supervising professor (Article 7, Paragraph 2, Rules for the Graduate School of IST).
