Common use of Orientation and In-Service Program Clause in Contracts

Orientation and In-Service Program. 12.01 The Employer provides a comprehensive orientation of such duration, as it may deem appropriate, taking into consideration the needs of the Employer and the NPs involved. 12.02 Both the Employer and the Union recognize their joint responsibility and commitment to provide, and to participate in, in-service education. The Union supports the principle of its members' responsibility for their own professional development and the Employer will endeavour to provide employees with opportunities to attend related programs. 12.03 The delegation of Controlled Acts shall be in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act, Medical Directives, and related statutes and regulations and in accordance with guidelines established by the College of Nurses of Ontario from time to time, and any Employer policy related thereto, provided that if the Union is of the opinion that such delegation would be inimical to proper patient care, the Union may refer the issue to the Union Management Committee. (a) The Employer shall endeavour to provide NPs with an opportunity to attend in-service programs during their regularly scheduled working hours. When a NP is on duty and authorized to attend an in-service program at the Employer or required by the Employer to attend courses outside of her regularly scheduled working hours she shall be paid for all time spent in attendance on such courses at her regular straight time hourly rate of pay. (b) The Employer will provide for regular staff meetings. NPs will be paid at their regular straight time hourly rate for attendance at such meetings. 12.05 NP’s may be required, as part of their regular duties, to supervise the activities of students. The Employer and Bargaining Unit Members will collaborate to develop the Guidelines for use of the preceptor stipends. Where a NP is pre-authorized by her Manager to perform nursing NP student supervision duties, the Employer will pay the NP a premium of one dollar ($1.00) per hour for all hours spent supervising nursing NP students. The Employer reserves the right to limit the number of nursing students to be supervised. After consultation with the NPs regarding any education opportunities, any remaining dollars from the stipend will be used to purchase program resources (i.e. medical equipment or client/staff education materials) as agreed to by the parties. Any information that is provided to the Employer by the educational institution with respect to the skill level of the students will be made available to the employees recruited to supervise students. 12.06 The Employer shall provide up to four (4) paid days per year to each NP for the purposes of attending courses or training for professional development subject to prior approval from the NP’s Manager.

Nurses who are subject to layoff due to technological change will be given notice of such layoff at the earliest reasonable time and in keeping with the requirements of the applicable legislation and the provisions of Article 13 will apply. 10.09 Where computers and/or new computer technology (i.e. computer charting) are introduced into the workplace that nurses are required to utilize those computers in the course of their duties, the Home agrees that necessary computer training will be provided at no cost to the nurses involved. 10.10 A full-time or regular part-time nurse shall provide up be entitled to four leave of absence without loss of earnings from her or his regularly scheduled working hours, for a period not to exceed one (41) paid days per year to each NP day, for the purposes purpose of attending courses writing exams arising out of the Quality Assurance Program required by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The nurse shall suffer no loss of seniority as a result of such leave of absence. The period of the leave may include the night shift prior to, or training any scheduled shifts commencing on, the day of the examination. Part-time nurses who were pre-scheduled to work will be credited with the seniority and service for professional development subject to prior approval from all such hours that would otherwise have been worked as provided above for the NP’s Managerpurpose of writing such exams.

Nurses are expected, as part of their regular duties, to provide guidance and advice to members of the health care team. Nurses may, from time to time, be assigned a formal mentorship role for a designated nurse. Mentorship is a formal supportive relationship between two nurses, which results in the professional growth and development of an individual to maximize her or his clinical practice. The Employer shall provide up relationship is time limited and focused on goal achievement. Orientation to four (4) paid days the organization or general functioning of the unit does not constitute entorshi p After consultation with the nurse being mentored, the Hospital will identify the experiences required to meet her or his learning needs, and will determine the duration of the mentorship assignment and expectations of the mentor. The Hospital will provide, on a regular basis, all nurses with an opportunity to indicate their interest in assuming a mentorship role, through a mechanism determined by the local parties. The Hospital selects and assigns the mentor for a given mentoring relationship. At the request of any nurse, the Hospital will discuss with any unsuccessful applicant ways in which she or he may be successful for future opportunities. The Hospital review the workload of the mentor and the nurse being mentored to facilitate successful completion of the mentoring assignment. The Hospital will pay the nurse for this assigned additional responsibility a premium of sixty cents per year hour, in addition to each NP her or his regular salary and applicable premium allowance. The Hospital may establish internships for the purposes purpose of attending courses or training for professional development meeting future projected shortages. In such circumstances, the implementation and guidelines of an arrangement will be determined locally by the Hospital and the Union subject to the following: Internships are designed to develop the Hospital’s staff in order to fill positions for which there are currently no qualified internal candidates and/or for which shortages are predicted within a five (5) year period. Internships enable hospitals to maximize the use of qualified internal staff to meet their human resources needs, while at the same time providing career development opportunities for their employees. To provide direction to the local parties in developing and implementing (an) the Ontario Nurses’ Association and Participating Hospitals have agreed to the following principles: The Hospital will establish the expectations for each internship opportunity; i There will be an open application process for internship opportunities; The opportunities will be open to currently employed nurses who can demonstrate continuous learning, and a commitment to the Hospital; Nurses who are selected for internship opportunities will commit to continued employment on a mutually determined basis; Initiatives to support selected candidates may include but are not limited to: No loss of regular wages while attending a requisite course Paid course fees Paid time for clinical in the Hospital or another clinical site Any other initiatives, as agreed.
