Distribution of the Application Environment. When a multiagent system is distributed, more than one execution environment is used. In order to use these execution environments, the application environ- ment has to be distributed as well. When doing so, the application environment is split in two parts: logical application environment: the part of the application environment that communicates with the agents. In a distributed setting, there can either be one big logical application environment (so the agents are not necessary aware of the distributed nature of the system, Fig. 1(b)) or multiple small logical application environments, one on each host (so the agents must be aware of the distributed nature, Fig. 1(c)). physical application environment: the part of the application environment that interacts with the execution environment. This is always split in dif- ferent parts on each host because it represents the way the information is stored in the distributed system.
