Catastrophic Illness or Non-work Related Injury: A catastrophic illness or non - w o r k r e l a t e d injury is one that is expected to incapacitate the employee or a family member for an extended period of time. Because he or she has exhausted all full-pay sick leave and other paid time off work, there is financial hardship for the employee. Examples include life threatening injury or illness, or non-work related injury, cancer, AIDS, heart surgery, stroke, etc.
