Compensation for Substituting During Planning Period. The District relies on the AESOP system to identify substitutes when needed. Teachers are therefore encouraged to promptly record the need for a substitute at their earliest possible convenience. When it is nevertheless necessary for the District to identify a substitute, this Section Z shall apply. In order to promote instructional continuity and scheduled planning time, each building will, no later than the end of the second instructional week, create a list of volunteers who will substitute for an absent teacher during the volunteer’s planning period. A copy of the list shall be provided to the building representative. The building administration shall first use the volunteer list, unless an unanticipated emergency occurs that prevents its use. Any teacher who substitutes for an absent teacher during their planning period shall receive compensation at the Schedule B curriculum rate, unless the principal (or designee)and teacher mutually agree that compensatory time in lieu of the curriculum rate shall be an option, per section F of this Article 22. If there are insufficient volunteers, unless an unanticipated emergency occurs, the principal or his/her designee will first (1) solicit a highly qualified paraprofessional with a substitute permit; (2) a part-time teacher; or (3) a teacher serving as a substitute administrator. In the event the above process does not identify a qualified substitute, the parties acknowledge the District’s legal obligation to assign a qualified person who may be a District teacher.
