Tuner definition

Tuner means a tuner in the conventional sense, i.e. a tuner is a device or component that has the capability to demodulate physical transmissions from the DTV network at the electrical and mechanical level, corresponding to the OSI Physical Layer 1. Examples include DVB-S, DVB-T, DVB-C, DVB-H, ITU G.992.x (G.DMT etc), IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX). A tuner may also incorporate functionality from higher OSI layers (for example Ethernet), but to be classified as a “Tuner” for the purposes of this Voluntary Agreement it must provide OSI Layer 1 functionality and be used for the purpose of reception of digital media (DTV) content. A “Return Path” and an “Out-of-Band Tuner” is not considered a Tuner for the purposes of this Voluntary Agreement – see separate definitions. For the avoidance of doubt an Ethernet connector is not a Tuner as it does not provide OSI layer 1 functionality.
