Substance Misuse. Domestic violence has been shown to be closely associated with alcohol and drug misuse (▇▇▇▇▇, ▇▇▇▇▇, ▇▇▇▇▇▇, et al, 1990; ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇, 2005; Chang, Shen & ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇, 2009; ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ & ▇▇▇▇-▇▇▇▇▇▇▇, 2006); although findings are not always consistent (▇▇▇▇▇ & ▇▇▇▇, 2003). A paucity of research has examined the temporal relationship between women’s substance misuse and experiences of abuse (World Health Organization, 2007); yet, a recent longitudinal study found that domestic violence within the first year of marriage was predictive of women’s heavy episodic drinking one year later (▇▇▇▇▇, ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ & ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇, 2003). It is beyond the scope of this research study to review the substantial literature on the relationship between domestic violence and substance misuse.
