The Professional Development Points clause establishes a system for tracking and awarding points to individuals for participating in approved professional development activities. Typically, this clause outlines what types of activities qualify, how points are calculated, and any requirements for maintaining or advancing professional status, such as attending workshops, completing courses, or participating in conferences. Its core function is to encourage ongoing learning and skill enhancement by providing a structured incentive and accountability mechanism for professional growth.
Professional Development Points. 1. Beginning on September 1, 2003, the following teachers will be eligible to utilize Professional Development Points/Continuing Education Units to be applied towards advancement on the salary schedule: (a) teachers hired before September 1, 2003 who hold a Master’s degree or are currently in any MA column, and (b) those teachers who began work after September 1, 2003 who have earned a Master’s degree. 2. Professional development/continuing education programs to be submitted by a teacher must meet the criteria of being intellectually challenging, add to the teacher’s repertoire of skills and content knowledge, enhance their contribution to the learning of students and lead to the improvement of teacher skills. Teachers must meet the goals and objectives of the school system and the teacher’s individual professional development/continuing education plan. 3. Requests will be submitted to the Superintendent for review and approval. A standard pre-approved form for this purpose shall be available in the Principal’s office. Completed forms are to be submitted to the superintendent for approval prior to participating in the professional development/continuing education experience. 4. Credit will be awarded on the basis of one (1) credit for each 15 hours of coursework or training. For example, 15 hours = 1 credit, 30 hours = 2 credits, etc. to a maximum of three (3) credits for 45 hours per contract year. The content of the professional development/continuing education experience should be equivalent in academic rigor to a graduate level course. 5. In order to earn credit, participants must provide (a) evidence of attendance for the hours requested, and (b) an observable demonstration of learning which could include a written product, report, or other forms of documentation required by the Superintendent. 6. There must be evidence that there are blocks of at least fifteen (15) professional development/continuing education hours which are ongoing and provide information and/or training in the same subject or topic area. 7. Professional development/continuing education points for the purpose of movement on the salary schedule will not be awarded for in-house programs of the Lenox Public Schools, attending workshops during the school day, attendance at professional conferences or informational session/meeting, mentoring, peer coaching, peer assistance, serving as a cooperative teacher, being a member of an accreditation team, publishing an earned doctorate thesis, ...
Professional Development Points. (PDPs) – Re-certification PDPs Inside of School Hours Points awarded for participation in workshops, seminars, or courses, as well as for attendance at conferences that are offered by MA DESE, any school district, an educational collaborative, or a provider that is registered with ESE during normal contractual hours. Each PDP is equivalent to one (1) hour of professional development work. For recertification purposes a series of short-term activities in a given topic must equal ten (10) hours and include an assessment of learning with the participant meeting the criteria for mastery. For re-certification purposes, conferences must span over at least two (2) days and/or offer a series of workshops/sessions that will cover at least ten (10) hours in a given topic. (May NOT be used for column movement).
