Conclusion and follow-up. SURF and the Open Education SIG deem the strategic workshops a success, due to the enthusiastic responses and participants’ clear willingness to openly share their knowledge and experiences. The participating institutions have attested to the usefulness of the workshops in converting broad ideas (‘we need to do something with open and online education’) into concrete projects and/or providing the initial impetus for forming a vision on open and online education. In 2014, SURF will offer a follow-up to the strategic workshops. In addition to new workshops for institutions wishing to get started with open and online education, we are also considering follow- up activities aimed at the current cohort. During the workshops, higher education institutions frequently ask whether they can receive support if they continue on this route. Given the diversity in the plans of the participants (ranging from pilot projects to policymaking), any such assistance will need to take various forms.
