Psychological abuse – including emotional abuse, threats of harm or abandonment, deprivation of contact, humiliation, blaming, controlling, intimidation, coercion, harassment, verbal abuse, cyber bullying, isolation or unreasonable and unjustified withdrawal of services or supportive networks.
As Herman (1992) relates, “Methods of psychological control are designed to instill terror and helplessness and to destroy the victim's sense of self in relation to others.” Psychological abuse is the glue that binds the physical types of abuse together (Hunter, 2000).
