Upon notification the District shall grant a full-time employee bereavement leave with pay following a death in the family. Employees will be entitled to up to forty (40) hours of paid bereavement leave; provided that additional paid leave of up to twenty-four (24) hours may be approved where necessary to address special circumstances (e.g., long-distance travel, estate responsibilities, etc.). Part-time employees are entitled to bereavement leave on a pro rata basis according to the proportion of a full-time work schedule they are regularly scheduled to work.

The arbitrary refusal of a reasonable amount of leave to employees when they can be spared, or failure to handle promptly cases involving sickness or business matters of serious importance to the employee, is an improper practice and may be handled as unjust treatment under this Agreement. In instances where leaves of absence greater than three (3) days are granted, the Local Chairperson concerned will be informed. Upon submission of a certificate issued by a qualified health practitioner indicating that a family member has a serious medical condition and there is significant risk of death occurring within a period of twenty-six (26) weeks, an employee will be entitled to take up to eight (8) weeks of unpaid leave in order to provide care and support to that specified family member. NOTE – Family members will be defined as those contained in Article 18.

Family Leave Upon submission of a certificate issued by a qualified health practitioner indicating that a family member has a serious medical condition, and there is significant risk of death occurring within a period of 26 weeks, an employee will be entitled to take up to eight weeks of unpaid leave in order to provide care and support to that specified family member. NOTE – Family members will be defined as those contained in Article 27. Employees covered by this Agreement and those dependent upon them for support, will be given free passenger rail transportation. This does not refer to special free transportation which may be issued to employees in train service on account of the necessary requirements of that service.
